The Civil Engineering Department has programs for a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE), a Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering and Management (BSCEM), and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE).

The Civil Engineering (CE) program prepares graduates to enter the profession in planning, design, construction, operations, or management capacities on such projects as freeways, highways, major buildings, dams, bridges, aqueducts, pipelines, airports, hydro-electric installations, water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, flood control works, and urban development programs. The department offers three subplans: the general civil engineering subplan; the environmental engineering subplan; and the geospatial engineering subplan.

The general civil engineering, geospatial engineering, and environmental engineering subplans are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET under the civil engineering criteria, http://www.abet.org. The geospatial engineering subplan is also accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET under the surveying engineering criteria, http://www.abet.org.

All subplans provide broad background in the various aspects of the civil engineering profession. The environmental engineering subplan emphasizes solving water resources and environmental problems. The geospatial engineering subplan prepares students to succeed in the land surveying and geomatics profession.

Student projects and field trips are utilized to demonstrate practical applications of classroom and laboratory theory and analysis. Interactions with professional engineering technical groups and societies offer excellent opportunities for student contact with experienced, practicing engineers.

CE graduates are employed by governmental agencies at federal, state, and municipal levels, by engineering contractors, and by private consulting firms. These graduates are prepared to do productive work in their first job as well as to develop within their profession throughout their engineering career. The curriculum is designed to prepare a student for direct entry into the engineering profession, professional registration, and for graduate school.

The Construction Engineering Technology (CET) program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) of ABET under the Construction Engineering Technology Program Criteria (http://www.abet.org). Starting Fall 2018, the name of the existing Construction Engineering Technology (CET) Program will be changed to Construction Engineering and Management (CEM), and the CEM Program will seek accreditation under the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Construction Engineering Program Criteria. Starting Fall 2018, the name of the existing Construction Engineering Technology (CET) Program will be changed to Construction Engineering and Management (CEM), and the CEM Program will seek accreditation under the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Construction Engineering Program Criteria. The CEM Program provides the student with a firm background in construction practices. Graduates may eventually work in any area of construction including commercial, heavy-civil, and residential. CEM graduates work with owners, developers, architects, engineers (civil, mechanical, and electrical), building departments, governmental agencies, contractors, and subcontractors to implement a variety of construction projects. Job titles include field engineer, project engineer, superintendent, as well as estimator, scheduler, and project manager.

Students in the CEM Program receive training in construction materials, drafting, computer applications, construction surveying, structural design, soil mechanics, construction equipment, estimating, scheduling, accounting, project management, safety and law.

The CEM Program has close ties with the construction industry. The student organization is the Construction Engineering and Management Association (CEMA), which is associated with the Associated General Contractors (AGC), Building Industry Association (BIA), and Construction Management Association of America (CMAA). This program offers a number of construction scholarships, and students may apply for grants based on financial need and/or academic achievement. The Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) Program builds upon an undergraduate education and facilitates more advanced study in one of the branches of civil engineering. Students must select one of five options: Construction Engineering and Management, Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering.

BSCE Program Educational Objectives

Our graduates will be practicing professionals who:

  1. Develop a career as an engineer, surveyor, and/or manager in the civil engineering, construction, or engineering related fields.
  2. Maintain and promote professional competency, via professional licensure and life-long learning through continuing education, graduate studies, and participation in professional societies.
  3. Practice the profession of engineering, taking into consideration the ethical, political, economical, legal, environmental, and societal impacts of their decisions.

BSCEM Program Educational Objectives

These outcomes follow the mission of the Construction Engineering and Management Program to provide a world class education in construction engineering that ties the latest advancement of research in the discipline to practical knowledge that services our graduates, industry, and community at large. In addition, these outcomes meet the program educational objectives of the Construction Engineering and Management Program (assessed via an alumni survey three or more years after CPP students complete their BSCEM degree) to develop engineers who:

  1. Prepare graduates with education experience that will provide them with a competitive edge that will prepare them for a successful career in the construction industry.
  2. Prepare graduates for the most recent trend of construction engineering and infrastructure management and prepare them to be leaders in achieving sustainable and lean construction.
  3. Prepare graduates to pursue continuing education or higher degrees in Construction Engineering and Management or other related fields.
  4. Prepare graduates in pursuing professional registration and certification that are necessary for them to advance in their careers.

Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering and Management students are encouraged to become active in the student chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Construction Engineering and Management Association (CEMA), Structural Engineering Association of Southern California, Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), California Land Surveyors Association, Society of Environmental Engineers, CalGeo, North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT), Design Build Institute of America (DBIA), and the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Qualified students are invited to join the student chapter of Chi Epsilon, the national civil engineering honor society.
