The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering offers a BS degree in Chemical Engineering, a Minor in Materials Engineering and an MS in Engineering with Emphasis in Materials Engineering.

Chemical Engineering is the branch of engineering that embraces the development and application of industrial processes that involve chemical and physical changes of materials. These processes must be accomplished in a competitive economy and in an environmentally safe manner to create products which are useful and essential to the modern world. Chemical Engineering includes the design, development, and production of many products such as fuels and petrochemicals, plastics, fibers, paper, foods, materials and pharmaceuticals. A Chemical Engineering degree is also good preparation for careers in pollution prevention, waste minimization or biomedical engineering.

Materials Engineering is that branch of engineering that deals with developing products and processes based on understanding the structure of materials.  The goal of the materials engineer is to understand the structure of materials (at the micro- or the nanolevel) to improve their properties and ultimately their performance. Materials engineers apply this knowledge to the production, selection and utilization of materials. Since engineers are called upon to work with new ideas and materials, the engineering graduate with a minor in materials engineering is very well prepared to respond to such a challenge and thus has a career advantage.

The MS in Engineering with Emphasis in Materials Engineering provides another avenue for engineers to add to their undergraduate degrees. This program is described elsewhere in this catalog.

Chemical and Materials Engineering students are encouraged to become active in the student chapters of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE), Material Advantage and NACE International. Qualified students are invited to join the student chapter of Omega Chi Epsilon, the Chemical Engineering honor society and/or Alpha Sigma Mu, the international professional honor society for Materials Science and Engineering.
