LS 4611 - Liberal Studies Senior Capstone (3)

An intensive student-driven inquiry-based research project as a capstone or final task to the Liberal Studies learning experience. Demonstration of informational literacy, critical thinking, and knowledge synthesis in a semester long project that investigates a theme, topic, or real-world issue. By articulating the entire investigative process in writing, including presentation of their novel research findings, students will demonstrate written communication skills related to disciplinary conventions and content, the use of credible sources, and the role of audience. Constructive feedback will be provided during the process to improve and assess student writing and oral communication skills, and other major skills and disciplinary knowledge. The Liberal Studies curricula prioritizes commitment to social and environmental justice, thus students are encouraged to draw on critical theory and critical interdisciplinary perspectives in the LS curricula prior to LS 4611 in formulating and conducting their projects, such as feminist intersectionality, queer theory, Critical Race Theory, and critical disability studies. Through effective written communication scaffolded across the student research process, the course instructor will guide students in scholarly research, writing, argumentation, and citation.
