ECS 3400 - Language and Literacy in Multilingual Families and Communities (3)


Introduces theory and research on language learning in multilingual families and communities. Includes fieldwork examining “funds of knowledge” of diverse children (ages 0-8). An evaluation of theories and conceptual approaches related to the development of first language, bilingualism, and multilingualism. Assesses institutional policies and practices impacting linguistically diverse children’s home language maintenance and school learning, including language preservation and revitalization. Fieldwork activity required.

Prerequisite(s): ECS 100 or ECS 1000 , and ECS 110 or ECS 1100 .
Pre or Corequisite(s): ECS 310 or ECS 3100 , and ECS 320 or ECS 3200 .
