ARO 3261 - Aerospace Structural Mechanics I (3) Fundamental concepts of stress and strain including Hooke’s Law. Axial and shear stress. Stress-strain diagrams. Stress concentrations. Torsional stress of round, non-round, and thin-walled sections. Shear and bending moment diagrams. Elastic bending stresses in beams. Bending about non-principal axes. Deflection of beams using singularity functions. Shear stress, shear flow and shear center in solid shapes and thin-walled members. Transformations of stress & strain, principal stresses and Mohr’s circle. Failure theories, including interaction equations. Strain gage relations. Membrane stresses in thin-walled pressure vessels. Limit and ultimate loads, factors of safety, and margin of safety. Mechanical properties of aerospace materials. Stability of columns. Plastic bending & torsion. Introduction to strain energy and to Castigliano’s Theorem.
