Hospitality Management, B.S.: 180 units

The college offers a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management that provides a combination of hospitality management, business, and general education coursework designed to assure that students understand the economic, legal, and social forces that shape the hospitality industry. Major coursework emphasizes qualitative and quantitative analysis, marketing and human resources. The program objectives include team building, unique characteristics of service, guest encounter skills, technology, critical thinking, ethics and leadership. Students work with a faculty mentor to design a series of elective courses to help them focus on individual career goals. Additionally, students learn about the hospitality industry by completing a minimum of 800 required hours of professional work experience prior to graduation.

Student Learning Outcomes of Hospitality Management Undergraduates

Through participation in curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities, including professional work experience and networking with our industry partners, Bachelor of Science Graduates of The Collins College of Hospitality Management will develop the competencies necessary to successfully manage in various hospitality organizations. These competencies include:

  • Characteristics of Hospitable Service
    Create favorable guest experiences by using professional service management techniques in a hospitality business environment.
     
  • Technological Literacy
    Apply current and relevant technologies in a manner designed to enhance organizational performance in a hospitality business environment.

  • Analytical Thinking
    Make clear and logical decisions by organizing, analyzing, and interpreting information and formulating rational solutions in a hospitality business environment.
     
  • Teamwork
    Contribute to positive team performance in a hospitality business environment by appraising and managing one’s team-related competencies, in particular, the knowledge, skills, and attitudes considered transportable from one team to another.
     
  • Leadership
    Model the behaviors of effective, ethical leaders by demonstrating the fundamental principles of leadership in a hospitality business environment.

* Professional Work Experience: A minimum of 800-hours of PWE must be completed and documented prior to enrolling in HRT 341 .  Collins College students must perform a minimum of 800 hours of Professional Work Experience (PWE), with 400 of the hours performed in residence.  PWE is hospitality-specific industry work performed after high school graduation.  Document PWE on company letterhead and letter(s) should show the total hours worked and explain the student’s job description(s) and related duties.  Faculty recommend that PWE show growth in knowledge and skills above those of an entry-level employee.

** HRT 382  and HRT 383L  must be taken in two consecutive quarters.  When students enroll in HRT 382  , they must select one of two options available.  The lunch option will require students to take HRT 382 -01 and HRT 383L -01.  The dinner option will require students to take HRT 382 -02 and HRT 383L -02.

*** HRT 304  and HRT 390  are prerequisites to HRT 393 /HRT 393L .  Students must complete a minimum 200 hours of hotel/lodging-specific PWE (may be part of overall PWE) prior to enrolling in HRT 393 /HRT 393L .

Required Support Courses: 17 units


Some major support courses should be used to satisfy the indicated GE requirements.  If these courses are not used to satisfy GE, the total units to degree may be more than 180 units.

Elective Support Courses: 28 units


Of the 28 units required in this section, at least 4 units must be 400-level HRT, and 12 units may be advisor-approved non-HRT courses.

Some major support courses should be used to satisfy the indicated GE requirements.  If these courses are not used to satisfy GE, the total units to degree may be more than 180 units.

HRT 200, 299, 400 and 499 may be applied to this area - consult with advisor.

Unrestricted Electives: 4-12 units


Select a sufficient number of courses so that the total from “Required Support”, “Elective Support”, “GE”, and “Unrestricted Electives” is at least 117 units.
